The Tuesday Avacyn Restored previews continue:
Pretty good... I think? Well, not so fast.
While wrath effects are always nice to have, I'm always hesitant to embrace any card that offers your opponent a choice. Unless your name is Fact or Fiction, Gifts Ungiven, or Liliana's Ultimate Ability, you're probably a mediocre card at best. At best this would be in the same class as Diabolic Edict or Chainer's Edict and at worst this could be Book Burning or Browbeat. On one hand, the problem with it of course is that your opponent gets to choose the best scenario given the current board state. On the other hand, the thing that's great about it is that you get to choose what the current board state is when the spell is cast. And what makes FoF, Gifts, and Liliana so great is that they're still very good under the worst conditions. I'm just not convinced that this falls under that category.
Given everything I just stated above, what decks would this be best in...? It would either have to be a deck that hits hard and fast where the life loss would effect your opponent greatly or a control deck that neutered your opponents creatures (but didn't kill them) so that when this spell would be cast it would have maximum potential life loss. Or maybe it could just be a sideboard card used against tokens. When considering the current deck in Standard, maybe this has a place in UB control? Or maybe tech against Lingering Souls? Ah, who knows?
