Darksteel Cascade

I know I just made a post about my old Erratic Draco deck, but here's another take on that original concept which was then taken in another direction:

Darksteel Cascade

Creatures (13)
4 Birds of Paradise
3 Eternal Witness
4 Bloodbraid Elf
2 Darksteel Colossus

Draw (9)
4 Brainstorm
4 Sylvan Library
1 Maelstrom Nexus

Other (12)
4 Artifact Mutation
2 Fire/Ice
3 Erratic Explosion
1 Aether Mutation
2 Violent Outburst

Mana (26)
4 Darksteel Ingot
4 Tropical Island
4 Volcanic Island
4 Taiga
8 Fetch Lands
2 Gaea's Cradle

How does the deck work?

Multiple copies of Sylvan Library and Brainstorm set up the perfect cascades for Bloodbraid Elf and Violent Outburst. While I'm stacking my deck for cascade, I'm also hoping to get lucky and get the ability to stack a Darksteel Colossus with an Erratic Explosion in hand, ready to go. The reason the colossus isn't a Draco is because I actually want the option to hard cast it onto the field. And both Darksteel Colossus and Darksteel Ingot act as permanent targets for Artifact Mutation. (The fact that they're indestructible is important when you hit it with cascade and want to cast the mutation on the spot, generating 3 or 11 saprolings for "free.") When all else fails, cast a Violent Outburst and swing in with your entire army and hope for the best.

In addition to the Birds of Paradise and Darksteel Ingots, there are a pair of Gaea's Cradles to help power out the colossus. And finally, because I have access to all five colors of mana, a single Maelstrom Nexus is included in the deck just to sweeten the deal.

And remember, every time you use a fetch land you get to shuffle your library. So let's say you have three Sylvan Libraries in play; every time you use a fetch land you get to stack the top 7 cards of your library to set up another series of cascades.

How does this deck differ from similar decks out there?

When building this deck, it really took a left turn from Erratic Draco when I was looking to feature a card with cascade other than Bloodbraid Elf. I took another look at Violent Outburst, swapped the Draco for a Darksteel Colossus, and figured I'd have some fun with saprolings. I figured Erratic Explosion already takes advantage of high convereted mana cost and I might as well throw in some more.

What is your favorite thing about the deck?

With Birds of Paradise and Darksteel Ingot, it was then possible to support a Maelstrom Nexus. And what casual player in their right mind doesn't enjoy a big splashy card every once in a while?
